I am committed to continued learning in my profession, especially about practices and approaches that keep me growing as a therapist.
Professional growth often comes through regular supervision and directed reading in the field. Other times, it involves taking a deep dive into structured training and/or experiential learning about a specific psychological approach or modality. For example, many years ago, I studied Internal Family Systems (IFS) for an extended period of time. Several years later, I went through a training sequence to learn a modality called Eye Movement Desensitization Reprogramming (EMDR). Many therapists, myself included, are now combining these two approaches to create a comprehensive healing framework for trauma called IFS informed EMDR.
I have been especially inspired by the work of Carl Jung, and in recent years, have been taking steps to deepen my study and understanding of the Jungian approach. This has been a natural fit for me in that I have generally worked from an in-depth approach to counseling throughout my career. Jung’s model has stood the test of time in ways that other foundational theories have not, and in many aspects, was far ahead of its time. It encompasses many visionary concepts that make it even more relevant today with the complex challenges of a new century. The depth and wisdom of Jung’s approach is part of what makes it particularly appealing to people who are on a conscious journey of healing, growth and awakening.
It is important to note that the true experts in the Jungian approach are known as Jungian analysts. Jungian analysts have undergone extensive and rigorous training in the Jungian method which includes their own personal analysis. Other therapists, myself included, often come to appreciate the power and depth of this approach, and make efforts to incorporate these methods in ways that they can. As a point of integrity, I find it important to distinguish between these levels of training and be transparent in naming this difference in respect to and as an honoring of those professionals who are the true experts in this way of working.
